Pakistani-Canadian writer pens new digital series, ARTIES, to de-colonize Science Fiction

Concept Trailer for Sci-Fi Series in Development Official Website: arties.tv Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ArtiesTV Twitter: https://twitter.com/ArtiesTV Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/artiestv/ Set in a police state coping with an Artificial Intelligence insurgency, ARTIES is a coming-of-age tale about a disillusioned teenage boy from the suburbs who enters an unlikely partnership with a rebellious Indigenous woman to evade government forces and deliver a necklace that holds the key to turning the tide in the Arties civil rights movement.

A concept trailer for a science fiction digital series, called ARTIES, will be released on March 1 st 2019. Creator Abdul Malik and producer Shant Joshi are offering to license the series to streaming platforms internationally. The project is represented by Ozi Menakaya at the Creative Artists Agency. The details can be found at arties.tv

Set in a police state coping with an Artificial Intelligence insurgency, ARTIES is a coming-of-age tale about a disillusioned teenage boy from the suburbs, MITCH, who enters an unlikely partnership with a freedom-fighting Indigenous woman, INDIRA, to evade government forces and deliver a necklace that holds the key to turning the tide in the Arties civil rights movement.

ARTIES was shortlisted for Sundance Institute’s New Voices Lab and for the Independent Filmmaker Project’s RYOT Next Generation 5G Storytelling Initiative. Framing the series around Mitch and Indira’s quest, creator Abdul Malik reveals the show to be a thoughtful treatise on decolonizing science fiction by implementing an inclusion mandate for the series and exploring topics of the refugee crisis, climate change, and the growing corrupt surveillance state, as audiences examine it through the lens of the present day pushed to its most logical and destructive extremes in the future. While science-fiction looks forward into future frontiers to conquer, the creators of the show are inspired to use the genre to right the wrongs of the past. ARTIES is structured as a South African-Canadian co-production with production to take place in the Eastern Cape, South Africa and post-production in Edmonton, Alberta. Both these lands and lands surrounding them were claimed unrightfully by force and as this series moves forward to production in these stolen lands, the show’s creators have made it extremely important to acknowledge and address that matter within the production and ethos of their series.

ARTIES has taken on an inclusion mandate requiring gender and racial parity within the leadership of the series. Of the twelve filmmakers behind the series, eleven are people of color, six are women, and six are Indigenous to the land they work in. The series also features trans non-binary alien performance artist Niuboi (aka Julie Ferguson) as PAVEL, an apex Artie character who accompanies Mitch and Indira on their journey.

ARTIES explores the topic of the broader global migrant and refugee crisis through the lens of Artificial Intelligent androids. Within the world’s history, Artificial Intelligent beings reveal themselves to human kind by washing up on the shore without a programmed sense of purpose. Alone and afraid, these beings seek refuge amongst humanity and slowly integrate themselves within human life, but are feared by a great number of humans who scapegoat the Arties for their own problems.

In the series, human-caused climate change results in the displacement, unemployment, and forced migration of humanity. As the common human being is forced to struggle through hardship as a result of this forced migration, an ideology grows questioning the value of accommodating and allocating resources for Artificial Intelligent beings who have no right co-exist amongst humanity. As production of the trailer took place during the extremely violent cold snap that shut down a majority of North America, the cast and crew behind ARTIES translated first-hand the disastrous effects of climate change to screen.

Within the world an authoritarian government has invested in thousands of low-flying surveillance drones that observe the lives of every citizen, searching for every last Artie and Artie sympathizer. Behind the authoritarian government and its surveillance drones exist the real power in the world, the oligarchic Mediators. The Mediators profit off the fear and conflict between humans and Arties. They send out agents, like the main villain MR. FACE, to ensure that the conflict endures but not to the point of a robot uprising or Artie extinction, just enough that humans buy into the hysteria and continue to obey.

Simultaneously a strong, unseen sci-fi world with a multicultural mandate in front of and behind the camera, and a metaphor for the migrant crisis and climate catastrophe we face today, ARTIES is science fiction at its sharpest and most socially relevant.

“90210,” A SIX-EPISODE EVENT SERIES, TO AIR ON FOX

Original “Beverly Hills, 90210” Cast Members Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling to Reunite in Iconic Show’s Return Home

Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling, the original stars of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” the groundbreaking teen drama that defined Southern California life, are set to return to FOX, the network they called home for the entire decade of the 1990s, in a six-episode event series, 90210. Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler (“90210,” “Awkward”) will write and executive-produce 90210. The series is scheduled to air Summer 2019.

90210  comes with a big twist: Priestley, Garth, Ziering, Carteris, Green and Spelling will play heightened versions of themselves in a brand-new serialized drama – with a healthy dose of irreverence – that is inspired by their real lives and relationships.

Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a “Beverly Hills,  90210” reboot up and running.  But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself.  What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow up together – attempts to continue from where they left off?

“‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ left an indelible impact on pop culture and an entire generation,” said Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, FOX.  “Its powerful legacy is an important part of our network’s DNA – bold stories not told anywhere else and bigger-than-life-characters – and we’re honored to bring back the beloved original cast members for 90210.”

Spawning generations of imitators, “Beverly Hills, 90210” premiered on FOX on October 4, 1990, when it became an instant pop culture sensation and one of the most adored programs in the network’s history.  Centered on the tony Los Angeles community identified in its title, the show aired for 10 seasons, during which it documented the trials and tribulations of a group of friends from high school to college and into early adulthood, as they navigated a myriad of coming-of-age dramas and complex rivalries, often making real-world headlines by tackling controversial and socially relevant topics.

90210 will be produced by CBS Television Studios and FOX Entertainment. It will be executive-produced by Chris Alberghini, Mike Chessler, Gabrielle Carteris, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling and Ian Ziering. The series was conceived by Alberghini, Chessler, Spelling and Garth. “Like” 90210 on Facebook at facebook.com/90210onFOX.

Based in Brooklyn, More Banana was founded in early 2018 as a response to a gap in the podcasting world. This gap was twofold: a noticeable lack of women working in audio and podcast production, and a need for women to not doubt their opinions, interests, and expertise, even in a media that does not highlight them as experts.  More Banana was created to close that gap and elevate the views of women; not just because it is a woman’s perspective, but because it’s a damn good perspective.

AIR JORDAN DOCUMENTARY UNBANNED: THE LEGEND OF AJ1 TO MAKE EXCLUSIVE STREAMING DEBUT ON HULU

This is the story of Air Jordan 1, the shoe that tapped a cultural nerve deep inside a generation, unlocked the voice of so many voiceless and transcended sports to become a global phenomenon.

Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1 starts streaming Thursday, February 14 on Hulu

Hulu and Lionsgate today announce that UNBANNED: THE LEGEND OF AJ1, the powerful and inspiring true story of how Air Jordan 1 (AJ1) transcended sport to become a global phenomenon, will stream exclusively on Hulu.  From first time filmmaker Dexton Deboree, the documentary interviews culture-defining titans, including NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan himself, Quincy Jones, Spike Lee, Lena Waithe, Carmelo Anthony, Chuck D, and Phil Knight among others, to explore how AJ1 was not just a sneaker, but a worldwide movement that broke through barriers of race, age, and gender to define the culture in which we now live. Lionsgate acquired the documentary which is set to make its exclusive streaming debut on Hulu on February 14.

“Sneaker fans all over the world remember the thrill of getting their first pair of Air Jordans, and this film explores the story behind and incredible impact of that iconic shoe,” said Heather Moosnick, Senior Vice President Content Partnerships, Hulu. “At Hulu, we’re focused on bringing highly compelling films and series to our viewers that reflect the culture and inspire conversation – and UNBANNED: THE LEGEND OF AJ1 is exactly that.”

“We were thrilled to get behind Dexton’s captivating film exploring the cultural phenomenon of the AJ1,” said Jared Goetz, Lionsgate President of North American Television Distribution. “With Hulu’s longstanding commitment to premium quality content, we’ve found the perfect partner to launch this film.”

This is the story of Air Jordan 1, the shoe that tapped a cultural nerve deep inside a generation, unlocked the voice of so many voiceless and transcended sports to become a global phenomenon. Beyond the shoe’s iconic image and deeper than the legend of its namesake – Michael Jordan – UNBANNED: THE LEGEND OF AJ1 explores AJ1’s role in giving birth to sneaker culture, re-shaping the game of basketball and the very identity of the NBA. It revolutionized the business of the professional athlete as a brand and radically disrupted a generation to define our modern global culture on and off the court. Through a riveting journey of powerful voices that also include Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, actor Anthony Anderson, DJ and record producer DJ Khaled across all aspects of culture from then and now, the film chronicles the shoe’s explosive impact on history and our modern world.

“I’m excited for the world to witness a story that breaks some rules and explores some new ground in expressing a tale as remarkable as any great fable we’ve heard or seen before,” said writer/director Dexton Deboree. “This film unearths a very powerful story that is beneath a cultural icon to share something that transcends sport, sneakers, and the popular zeitgeist of much of what happened not only with AJ1 and even Michael Jordan himself, but the radical cultural revolution that unfolded in its wake.”

UNBANNED: THE LEGEND OF AJ1 chronicles the dawn of the sneaker craze and the sneaker’s explosive cultural impact on music, fashion, art, and entertainment through powerful voices of then and now. The film is produced by Dexton Deboree and Stef Fink.

NEON’S APOLLO 11 TO RELEASE EXCLUSIVELY IN IMAX THEATRES FOR ONE WEEK ONLY BEGINNING MARCH 1

Exclusively in IMAX for One Week Only. Starting March 1. #Apollo11 From director Todd Douglas Miller (Dinosaur 13) comes a cinematic event fifty years in the making.

FEATURING NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN-FOOTAGE, APOLLO 11 IN IMAX IS A CINEMATIC EVENT 50 YEARS IN THE MAKING

NEON and IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) announced today “Apollo 11,” the highly-anticipated documentary which premiered to critical acclaim at 2019’s Sundance Film Festival, will be digitally re-mastered into the IMAX format and will initially release in IMAX theatres exclusively for one week only beginning March 1, 2019.  With some of the most spectacular and rarest behind-the-scenes space footage captured from the first moon landing, it is a cinematic event 50 years in the making that was designed for IMAX, the movie experience that has been bringing audiences to space for decades.

From director/producer Todd Douglas Miller (“Dinosaur 13”), producer Thomas Petersen at Statement Pictures and executive producers Amy Entelis and Courtney Sexton of CNN Films, “Apollo 11” was crafted from a newly discovered trove of 65mm footage, and more than 11,000 hours of uncatalogued audio recordings. The film takes audiences straight to the heart of NASA’s most celebrated mission—the one that first put men on the moon, and forever made Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins into household names. Immersed in the perspectives of the astronauts, the team in Mission Control, and the millions of spectators on the ground, moviegoers vividly experience those momentous days and hours in 1969 when humankind took a giant leap into the future.

Miller and team were working closely with NASA and the National Archives (NARA) to locate all existing Apollo 11 footage when NARA staff members made a startling discovery that changed the course of the project: an unprocessed collection of 65mm large format footage, never before seen by the public, containing stunning shots of the launch, the inside of Mission Control, and recovery and post-mission activities. The footage was so pristine and the find so significant that the project evolved beyond filmmaking into one of film curation and historic preservation. Commissioned by CNN Films to create a film about the most extraordinary event in human exploration, “Apollo 11” began taking shape as a documentary feature film.

Director, Todd Douglas Miller remarked on the release, "We’re so excited to be working with NEON and IMAX on this very special event film. Ever since we saw the first frame of 65mm film footage roll off the film scanner we always envisioned ‘Apollo 11’ to be seen on the biggest screens possible. IMAX theaters are the cathedrals of cinema and we can’t think of a more perfect way for audiences to enjoy the adventure of ‘Apollo 11’."

———

“Miller’s film is a stunning achievement in filmmaking,” said Megan Colligan President of IMAX Entertainment. “The film is immersive, crisp and clear.  Audiences can palpably feel the tension, immense pride and overwhelming joy of the team that came together to make the impossible possible. We at IMAX couldn’t be happier to be partnering with NEON in the release of ‘Apollo 11’.”

The more than 11,000 hours of audio recordings were made by two custom recorders which captured individual tracks from 60 key mission personnel throughout every moment of the mission. “Apollo 11” film team members created code to restore the audio and make it searchable, then began the multi-year process of listening to and documenting the recordings, an effort that yielded remarkable new insights into key events of the mission as well as surprising moments of humor and camaraderie.

The digitization of the 65mm collection—as well as the re-scanning of 16mm and 35mm materials—was undertaken at Final Frame, a post-production house in New York City, which helped create a custom scanner, capable of high dynamic range scanning at resolutions up to 8K. The resulting transfer—from which the film was cut—is the highest resolution, highest quality digital collection of Apollo 11 footage in existence.

Constructed entirely from archival materials and eschewing talking heads, “Apollo 11” captures the enormity of the event by giving audiences of all ages the direct experience of being there. When John F. Kennedy pledged in 1962 to put Americans on the moon by the end of the decade, he described it as a bold act of faith and vision. “Apollo 11” bears witness to the culmination of that pledge, when America and the world came together in an extraordinary act of unity and resolve, to achieve one of the greatest and most complex feats in human history.

“Apollo 11” will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX ExperienceÒ with proprietary IMAX DMRÒ (Digital Re-Mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

The film currently holds a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

NEON acquired three of the most talked about features at last year’s Sundance Film Festival:  Reinaldo Marcus Green's Monsters & Men, winner of the Sundance Dramatic Special Jury Award for Outstanding First Feature; Sam Levinson's Assassination Nation; and Tim Wardle's Three Identical Strangers, winner of the Sundance Special Jury Award for Storytelling which has surpassed $13m at the box office.  Upcoming releases include:  Harmony Korine’s The Beach Bum, John Chester’s The Biggest Little Farm, the electrifying Amazing Grace, and Todd Douglas Miller’s cinematic event, Apollo 11, which just had its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

After their successful collaboration on I, Tonya, in January 2018, 30WEST (Dan Friedkin's and Micah Green's strategic venture) partnered with NEON's Tom Quinn (Founder & CEO) and Tim League (Co-Founder) to become majority investors in the company.

NEON ACQUIRES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO SUNDANCE AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY HONEYLAND

NEON has acquired the North American rights to Honeyland, the wistfully delicate and visually stunning documentary from Macedonian filmmaking duo Ljubomir Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska. The film marks NEON’s fifth acquisition out of Sundance, with the company landing more films than any other key player at Sundance this year.

Honeyland has gathered rave reviews following its World Premiere in Sundance, receiving three jury prizes for: World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary, World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Cinematography and World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Originality.

Nestled in an isolated mountain region deep within the Balkans, Hatidze Muratova lives with her ailing mother in a village without roads, electricity or running water. She’s the last in a long line of wild beekeepers, eking out a living farming honey in small batches to be sold in the closest city – a mere four hours' walk away. Hatidze’s peaceful existence is thrown into upheaval by the arrival of an itinerant family, with their roaring engines, seven rambunctious children and herd of cattle.

Directors Ljubomir Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska say “Honeyland began as just another simple story, but it grew to become so much more. We are so proud of the final film, and there is no better way to get immersed in it than to experience it on the big screen. Thank you, NEON, for the opportunity to bring Honeyland to audiences the way we always wanted it to be seen.”

Stefanov and Kotevska’s debut feature was produced and edited by Atanas Georgiev and stars Hatidze Muratova, Nazife Muratova, Hussein Sam, Ljutvie Sam, and Mustafa Sam, with cinematography by Fejmi Daut and Samir Ljuma.

Submarine Entertainment is handling sales. The deal was negotiated by NEON and Submarine on behalf of the filmmakers.

NEON premiered Todd Douglas Miller’s stunning cinematic event, Apollo 11 and John Chester’s The Biggest Little Farm at Sundance 2019, and had an impressive hot streak of acquisitions, nabbing the rights to Alejandro Landes’ cinematic thriller, Monos, Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's horror film, The Lodge, Abe Forsythe’s Little Monsters, and Julius Onah’s Luce. NEON recently garnered an Academy Award® nomination for Border and continues to acquire some of the most anticipated titles, including: Tom Harper’s Wild Rose starring Jessie Buckley; and Bong Joon-Ho’s highly-anticipated drama Parasite.
