Brighter Days Ahead with New Tumbling Brights Holiday Lights Installation in Lincoln Square

Ten Illuminated Spirit Figures Shine Throughout Broadway Malls from

Columbus Circle to 70th St. as Symbols of Hope and Resilience

Lincoln Square, NY – As the holiday season begins and as a sign of brighter days ahead, the Lincoln Square Business Improvement District (BID) announced today the installation of a brand new, choreographed lighting display Tumbling Brights, a procession of ten lighted spirit figures that are currently illuminating the Broadway malls from Columbus Circle up to 70th St. this holiday season as symbols of hope, resilience and community solidarity.

Somersaulting their way through the neighborhood, each ethereal figure is positioned at different angles in a coordinated acrobatic display heading up from Columbus Circle and down from 70th St., converging in Dante Park across from Lincoln Center at the Statue of Dante Alighieri.  The grounds of Dante Park will be delicately illuminated as well, and the Statue will have a light projection with a constellation of stars warmly welcoming residents and visitors to the neighborhood. The full lighting installation will be on display through February 28, 2021.

The installation is designed by New York-based lighting firm Linnaea Tillett Lighting Design Associates with Seth Tillett. The brother and sister team drew their inspiration for this spirited installation from the Lincoln Square neighborhood itself as a center for arts and culture.  Seth Tillett is a theater and augmented reality designer whose industry has been essentially shuttered since the beginning of the public health crisis.  Inspired by the neighborhood, the lighting design also represents a show of solidarity for the arts and culture community and the hope that the lights of Lincoln Square’s performing arts culture will return stronger and brighter than ever before.  These bright figures are also a tribute to the vibrancy and strength of all New Yorkers, including the business community, which stands ready to safely welcome guests to the neighborhood over the holidays in compliance with local and state social distancing guidelines.

The figures were fabricated by Twoseven Inc., a multidisciplinary design firm also based in NYC, part of the BID’s efforts to support local businesses and artistic creation. The lights are also sustainable and environmentally friendly and are not wrapped around any trees.

“The holidays for the Lincoln Square neighborhood this year are about hope, hope for a healthy holiday season and hope for a better tomorrow,” said Monica Blum, President of the Lincoln Square BID.  “We hope this new, unique lighting display will lift the spirits of residents and visitors to our neighborhood and serve as a source of strength and inspiration to help us all through these challenging times.”

“We felt that a flow of figures uptown from Columbus Circle and downtown from 70th street would deliver a dynamic gathering of spirits to Dante Park. While best known for The Inferno, Dante’s most luminous words are reserved for Paradise and the ceaselessly revolving lights of the heavens. Emerging from darkness into the light became a key theme of this installation, and we are proud to support the Lincoln Square BID’s message of hope and resilience,” said Designer Seth Tillett.

Linnaea Tillett Lighting Design Associates’ projects in NYC include the newly opened Pier 26 at Hudson River Park, the Battery Bosque and the forthcoming Morgan Library and Museum Garden.

The Lincoln Square BID sincerely thanks Glenwood, Con Edison, Ogden CAP Properties, 15 Central Park West, Deutsche Bank, TD Bank, Fidelity Investments, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and the New York City Department of Transportation for making this lighting installation possible.

Check out Statue of Liberty on a cruise, with beautiful NYC views, like never before.

We are all getting bored sitting mostly at home and it’s getting stale. But outdoor activities, when possible, are still a great way to break the monotony. One great activity that’s safe and fun will be taking a cruise on the Hudson (not that cruise). Statue of Liberty cruises have been a popular staple on New York fort the longest time. But right now you can experience a Statue Cruise, like you have never before. Statue Cruises- is the official operator of ferry service to both islands on behalf of the National Park Service from Battery Park in lower Manhattan and Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. Now is the ideal time for NY & NJ residents and locals to visit and experience the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island, especially since the weather forecast this weekend looks great.

Both islands are open seven days/week with daily departures from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. From the great outdoors, to the history and simply coming together in a safe and socially distant way, eight reasons why now is a great time for a visit to the Crown Jewels of New York Harbor:

·         Open Space Galore & The Weather – Plenty of open space on both islands to enjoy the great outdoors and the spectacular views of New York Harbor. Plus, the weather looks great!

·         Lean and Clean – With strict social distancing guidelines and cleaning protocols in place, including deep cleanings of vessels throughout each day, mask requirements and more, Statue Cruises is taking all the necessary precautions to help keep guests safe on their journey.

·         Alone Time with Lady Liberty - When can you visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island with no wait times and without the peak crowds.

·         A socially distant way to get together before or during the holidays in the heart of NY Harbor.

·         Fun and Educational for the Kids – A great way to pass the time when the kids are out / off line from school with Veteran’s Day and holiday breaks coming up.

·         Head South… to the South Side of Ellis Island and its historic Hospital Complex that was used to treat sick immigrants at the turn of the 20th century with an Ellis Island Hard Hat Tour.

·         Coping with Pandemic Fatigue – If you need to get away and get out, there’s nothing like a Staycation to the Statue.

·         Timed and contactless ticketing via statuecruises.com helps manage capacity while providing easy flexibility to change the date/time of a reservation, especially if you want to give the gift of Liberty and culture to loved ones in advance of the holidays.

Few tips to make it more fun:

  • Dress warm, in layers. It’s colder on the cruise, warmer in the museum.

  • Get there 15 mins early, so you can get a good spot on the boat.

  • If open, go sit at top level of the boat, for the best views.

  • Make sure to visit the Ellis Island museum, a good place to warm up and lot of history to check out. Ships leave every 1 hour 10 mins, so keep an eye on the schedule.

  • You can only visit the Ellis Island Museum before you go to Statue of Liberty.

  • Make sure to take free audio tour devices available at check in, both at the Ellis Island and Liberty Island, they are great.

  • Maintain social distancing, wear masks and stay safe.

This is a great way to have some fun and a great time with family or even by yourself, enjoy some outdoor time, and learn about some New York and American history. Usually it’s very crowded, of course. But during the pandemic, you can get much less crowd and a unique experience, worth trying. if you have been putting Statue of Liberty on hold for years (like most New Yorkers!), or just want to do something fun outdoors, this is a good one.

Have a safe and fun Holidays. Happy Holidays!!

7 FREE things to do for New Year's Eve in NYC!

New York City and New Year's Eve have lot more in common than just sounding similar by being called NYC and NYE! NYC is synonymous with NYE celebrations, the best known and most popular event being the New Year's BALL DROP at TIMES SQUARE. But if you do not have the patience to stay out like that for hours and hours, in this freezing East Coast cold, there are few other FREE things that you could do to celebrate New Year's Eve in New York City.

  • NYRR Midnight Run & Fireworks in Central Park: It's not FREE to participate in the run, but it is free to watch and party in Central Park. The party starts at 10 pm, with a LIVE DJ. And you enjoy the amazing fireworks too. You can also go and do some ice skating at Wollman Rink.
  • Staten Island Ferry Ride: It's a fun ride (for FREE!) to take any time of the year, but on New Year's Eve, you can enjoy the fireworks in Manhattan (also Brooklyn and Jersey City) while admiring the NYC skyline. You can also buy drinks and snacks, from the bar on the boat. Plus they have a toilet (unlike Times Square Ball Drop). Just make sure to get your winter coat, and stay warm!
  • NYE Fireworks in Prospect Park: Enjoy amazing fireworks with the background of beautiful NYC skyline at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Just make sure to RSVP.
  • NYE Celebration and Fireworks at Coney Island: Coming into its fourth year, guests can dance to live music throughout the night and watch some of Coney Island's most notable side show performances. Enjoy a fireworks display at the stroke of midnight at this free family-friendly celebration. Free live entertainment begins at 9:00 p.m. at the Steeplechase Plaza. Free admission starts at 6:00 p.m. on the B&B Carousel. And a lot more. Enjoy!
  • Hang around Times Square (SECRET TIP!): You may not be the "IN" crowd, being inside, but you can walk close to the celebrations, like around 40th Street, or 50th Street, on Broadway or 7th Av. You can go to a bar or pub, or just hang outside around midnight. You can hear the noise, you can somehow hear the music, and still be part of the fun from outside. Better than standing in the crowd, in cold, for hours and hours. And you an walk to the center after midnight, and get some pictures (and even claim that you were there!).
  • Just go to a bar/pub/restaurant: That's an easy one, you are in NYC! Go to a bar, pub, restaurant or anything. Most places have some special or something going on for the NYE. Specially bars and pubs. Just step out of house and walk in to any of the places. You'll have a good time. It's NYC!
  • Or just STAY HOME, and watch TV: Honestly, in this freezing cold, it's never a bad idea. That's what I'm going to do. Watch the BALL DROP on TV, or any of the Holiday or New Year's special movies, or Netflix/Amazon/Hulu. There's so much going on, that you can have an amazing time, just at home. And there's social media (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram etc etc) to connect with your friends and family, as you celebrate and welcome the New Year's.

HAVE A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR'S EVE AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR 2018!

Pulmonary Hypertension Association’s “2015 Breathe Food Truck & Concert Series”

  • Announces Dates And Locations For Food And Music Events To Bring Awareness To Pulmonary Hypertension.
  • Taking place on the streets of New York City, events will combine performances by YouTube Sensation and Award Winning Singer/Songwriter, Chloe Temtchine, with cuisine by Korilla BBQ.

YouTube Sensation and Award Winning Singer/Songwriter, Chloe Temtchine, Film Producer and Entrepreneur, Marvin V. Acuna, the Pulmonary Hypertension Association* (PHA) and Korilla BBQ will all team up to present the “2015 Breathe Food Truck & Concert Series” - four events staged in various locations throughout New York City, combining musical performances by Temtchine with cuisine from the popular, Korilla BBQ Food Trucks.

Presented to bring awareness to a devastating condition, known as Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, the “2015 Breathe Food Truck & Concert Series” is the latest project by Temtchine and Acuna, designed to introduce the public to this condition, the challenges that come with diagnosing it, and to raise funds to both aid in the search for a cure as well as to care for those who are struggling to live with it. Each event will also include 50 free meals which will be given to lucky (and hungry) audience members, courtesy of Korilla BBQ.

Taking place throughout the month of October, in Midtown, the Financial District and Brooklyn, these events will feature the music of recording artist, Chloe Temtchine, who was diagnosed with severe Pulmonary Hypertension in 2013, after having been misdiagnosed for five years (Temtchine performs linked to an oxygen tank whom she affectionately refers to as, Steve Martin) and the delicious, all-natural, healthy, GMO-free food of Korilla BBQ Food Trucks, a popular sight throughout New York City. Named by the Village Voice as the #1 Food Truck in the city last year, they have arguably redefined Korean barbecue and Korean cooking and have taken it to the streets.

Temtchine said, "I am a HUGE food lover, and ever since my diagnosis,  have become much more conscious of the kind of food I eat. I'm a strong advocate of high-quality, healthy, GMO-free, and locally-sourced, fresh ingredients.

In addition, I'm a proponent of individuals who strive for excellence in what they do and who are driven, passionate and creative. Therefore, a series of events which combine my music with the savory Korean dishes created by the team from "Korilla" (NYC's #1 Food Truck) seemed like a perfect way to get out into the city and introduce people to the existence and realities of a condition that, while devastating, has managed to fly somewhat under the radar for the general public.”

Temtchine was recently featured in the Huffington Post; has performed on “Late Night with David Letterman,” is the voice behind the national commercial celebrating the 100th anniversary of American Express and has been featured on NY-1; The Nate Berkus Show (NBC); “Fearless Music” (FOX 5); her song “Brand New Day” has been featured on “The Early Morning Show” (CNN), and she has had songs placed in various TV series and films.

Korilla BBQ has been featured on The Food Network’s “The Great Food Truck Race” and on “Sesame Street.” They offer the best quality proteins, kimchi and vegetables that they can source, as well as seasonal specialties and the occasional secret menu. Korilla BBQ food trucks can be found roaming the city, and they recently opened their first brick and mortar shop in the East Village. They have garnered numerous awards including “Rookie of the Year” at the Vendy Awards, and "Best Food Truck" by The Village Voice.

The “2015 Breathe Food Truck & Concert Series” schedule:

  • All events will take place between 12:00PM and 3:00PM, Monday, October 5, 2015
  • Midtown: Between Park & Lexington
  • Wednesday, October 14, 2015 - Financial District: Front & Old Slip
  • Thursday, October 22, 2015 - Midtown: 55th & Broadway
  • Friday, October 23, 2015 - Brooklyn: TBD

* PHA received sponsorship support for the 2015 Breathe Concert Series from Actelion Pharmaceuticals US, Inc. and Bayer HealthCarE.

Open Mic in Brooklyn - THE OUTER LOOP THEATER EXPERIENCE

Last Tuesday, I was invited by a friend to attend an open mic at 6pm in Williamsburg at Over the Eight. I had never been to an open mic before and thought it would be nice to hear different artists from the New York scene.

First off, the space is really nice. The bar is very laid back, with a great atmosphere. Another room at the back is where the open mic took place. It is separated from the main bar and has a stage, cozy seats and plasma TVs to allow filmmakers to broadcast their work. The bar makes great Mexican food and we were provided with free samples of empanadas. As I said, the atmosphere is really relaxed and I loved that ! We were told not to hesitate to move during the performances, either to get a drink, take a bathroom break or just get another empanada.

The different artists were very different from one another and presented all excellent work. I was seriously shocked by the quality of each artist’s work. In an hour and a half, came on stage a singer/songwriter, a poet, a stand up perfomer,  a writer, a filmmaker and actors to play a scene from a playwright. All of these people were extremely talented, which I was not expecting ( I though maybe one or two will be really good but no- all of them !).

After the open mic, everyone could meet at the bar and mingle, chat, talk about different opportunities, or even get into deeper conversation about the state of the arts in the US today.

I decided to interview Michael Herman, who is behind the organization of these events and here is what he had to say :

Nina Moritz: Could you tell me a bit more about the project?

Michael Herman: So the non-profit company I founded 6 years ago, The Outer Loop Theater Experience, presents a super cool event called Talk Hard, which is a monthly open mic/showcase format opportunity for playwrights, actors, directors, poets, musicians, singers, djs, painters, writers, dancers, spoken word and hip hop artists, to get a peek at any new piece they're working on.... in front of a supportive, but critical audience. If they want some feedback? Great. And if they just want to hear it out loud in front of other humans? Great.

Nina Moritz: How often do you organize events?

Michael Herman: Talk Hard happens twice every month: The final Monday of each month, in Harlem, at Solace. And the 2nd Tuesday of each month in Brooklyn, at Over the Eight. And we’re looking at adding a 3rd one in midtown very soon.

Nina Moritz: What is the idea behind it?

Michael Herman: The Outer Loop is fundamentally a playground where we all come together to better our community and support the work of all playful human beings. So Talk Hard is one of these playgrounds for artists of all disciplines to come and play. I also like to think of it as a safe place to fail. We, as artists, need that.

Nina Moritz: Can any  kind of artist attend (designers, producers etc..)?

Michael Herman: Absolutely. Any artist at all. And for that matter, any human. We welcome anyone who wants to share their experience(s) with others.

Nina Moritz: Tell me a bit more about you and what you do.

Michael Herman: I am a director, playwright and teacher. I founded The Outer Loop in 2009 to help playwrights and other artists develop their work and get it up in front of audiences. Nothing brings me greater joy, than to watch a new play come to life, and a young artist have that first audience experience. It’s why we do what we do. For the moment.

I had an amazing time attending, I felt like being part of something, seeing talent emerge before my eyes and I’m pretty sure a lot of the people I saw will blow up in the coming years. Everyone was welcoming and supportive of each other, clapping loudly, encouraging each other. It was so easy to talk to everyone. If

you have some work you are unsure about and would like feedback, this is the place! If you are looking for a great time and a great show, this is the place!

Seriously, please go and check it out, you will not regret it!
