2015 Portland Film Festival Unveils Special Event - Guinness Record Setting Zombie Day, With director George C. Romero

Portland Film Festival announced today a record setting special filmed event, Zombie Day Apocalypse, to be held on Labor Day during the 2015 Portland Film Festival, which will take place September 1st - 7th.  Zombie Day Apocalypse, to occur on Monday September 7th, will attempt to set a new Guinness Book of World Records for 'most extras in a short film. Director George C. Romero, son of iconic horror director George A. Romero (Dawn of the Dead), will direct.

Award-winning makeup artists Conor McCullough (The Hunger Games) and Jason Collins (The Maze Runner, Firefly) will oversee makeup effects. Randall Jahnson (The Doors, The Mask of Zorro) wrote the screenplay, and Portland Film Festival Founder and Executive Producer Josh Leake is producing the filmed event.  Additional collaborators include the Pander Brothers (Dark Horse Comics), who are creating graphics and imagery. 

An anticipated cast of thousands are expected for the all-day holiday event, which will also include a late night surprise zombie film graveyard screening.

True Detective - Season 2 (3/4)

The first season of True detective was exemplary and extraordinary. It was mysterious, crazy, fun & entertaining. Not just the amazing performances and breathtaking visuals, but the plot and storyline was very tight, intriguing and just amazing. But this is the review for second season.

Second season was not as sharp, as brilliant or as anything. But it's still good. Fortunately enough, both the pilot and the finale were two of the best episodes. The entire season did try to maintain the similar cinematic visual styling, but did not have the mystery and aura of first season. But it was still very girthy and grounded, making it look cool. This was a star studded season with Hollywood A-listers Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrel, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly and many other big and good actors. The music was definitely a big high of this season.

The story takes place in California and follows the interweaving stories of officers from three cooperating police departments; when California Highway Patrol officer and war veteran Paul Woodrugh (Kitsch) discovers the body of corrupt city manager Ben Caspere on the side of a highway, Vinci Police Department detective Raymond "Ray" Velcoro (Farrell) and Ventura County Sheriff's Office CID Antigone "Ani" Bezzerides (McAdams) are called to assist in the following investigation. Career criminal Francis "Frank" Semyon (Vaughn) attempts to legitimize his business with his wife Jordan (Reilly) by investing in a rail project overseen by Caspere, but loses his money when Caspere is killed, prompting him to start his own investigation.

And amongst many up & downs, the story finally ends with all the male characters dying, in very well crafter death scenes. But still, they all die. The season ends in kind of downer note, with the "bad guys" winning. At least sorta!

Regardless, this is a good show and another little feather in HBO's cap. If you like good detective, suspense, thriller, dramas, you should watch it. If you saw the season 1 and expecting something better, or as good, you may skip it. And if you haven't seen season 1, go see it now!!

FSLC moves NYFF53 Opening Night screening of THE WALK to Sat, Sept 26

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced that the World Premiere of Robert Zemeckis’s The Walk will take place on Saturday, September 26 instead of Friday, September 25 due to Pope Francis’s upcoming visit to New York. The date change was made for logistical and security reasons. The film, which remains the Opening Night selection of the 53rd New York Film Festival (September 25 – October 11), will screen at Alice Tully Hall. Festival dates stay the same, with free NYFF programming to take place on Friday, September 25, prior to the Opening Night screening on Saturday, September 26.

The 17-day New York Film Festival highlights the best in world cinema, featuring top films from celebrated filmmakers as well as fresh new talent. FSLC announces the world premiere of Don Cheadle's MILES AHEAD as Closing Night for NYFF53

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced that Don Cheadle’s directorial debut Miles Ahead will make its World Premiere as the Closing Night selection of the upcoming 53rd New York Film Festival (September 25 – October 11). Cheadle, who co-wrote the script, stars as the legendary musician opposite Emayatzy Corinealdi and Ewan McGregor.

New York Film Festival Director and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones said: “I admire Don’s film because of all the intelligent decisions he’s made about how to deal with Miles, but I was moved—deeply moved—by Miles Ahead for other reasons. Don knows, as an actor, a writer, a director, and a lover of Miles’ music, that intelligent decisions and well-planned strategies only get you so far, that finally it’s your own commitment and attention to every moment and every detail that brings a movie to life. ‘There is no longer much else but ourselves, in the place given us,’ wrote the poet Robert Creeley. ‘To make that present, and actual … is not an embarrassment, but love.’ That’s the core of art. Miles Davis knew it, and Don Cheadle knows it.”

Don Cheadle added: “I am happy that the selection committee saw fit to invite us to the dance. It’s very gratifying that all the hard work that went into the making of this film, from every person on the team, has brought us here. Miles’ music is all-encompassing, forward-leaning, and expansive. He changed the game time after time, and New York is really where it all took off for him. Miles Davis was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. And how do you make a movie about him? You get to know the man inside and out and then you reveal him in full, which is exactly what Don Cheadle does as a director, a writer, and an actor with this remarkable portrait of Davis, refracted through his crazy days in the late-70s. Holed up in his Manhattan apartment, wracked with pain from a variety of ailments and fiending for the next check from his record company, dodging sycophants and industry executives, he is haunted by memories of old glories and humiliations and of his years with his great love Frances Taylor (Emayatzy Corinealdi). Every second of Cheadle’s cinematic mosaic is passionately engaged with its subject: this is, truly, one of the finest films ever made about the life of an artist. With Ewan McGregor as Dave Brill, the “reporter” who cons his way into Miles’ apartment. The film was produced by Don Cheadle, Pamela Hirsch, Lenore Zerman. Along with Daniel Wagner, Robert Barnum, Vince Willburn and Daryl Porter.
