HULU ADDS OFFICIAL SUNDANCE SELECTION ASK DR. RUTH TO CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY SLATE

New Documentary to Premiere on Hulu and in Theaters in 2019 with Magnolia Pictures Attached as Theatrical Distribution Partner

Hulu announced that it has acquired 2019 Official Sundance SelectionAsk Dr. Ruth to join its growing slate of award-winning documentary films, which includes 2018 Sundance Film Festival selections and critically acclaimed titles Minding the Gap and Crime + Punishment. The film will premiere at Sundance Film Festival, on Hulu and in theaters in 2019, and will receive the widest theatrical release for a Hulu Documentary to date.

Directed by Ryan White (The Keepers, The Case Against 8), Ask Dr. Ruth chronicles the incredible life of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a Holocaust survivor who became America's most famous sex therapist. With her diminutive frame, thick German accent, and uninhibited approach to sex therapy and education, Dr. Ruth transformed the conversation around sexuality. As she approaches her 90th birthday and shows no signs of slowing down, Ask Dr. Ruth follows Dr. Ruth as she revisits her painful past and unlikely path to a career at the forefront of the sexual revolution.

“I’ve never really stopped to examine my life, so when I first saw Ask Dr. Ruth even I was amazed by what had transpired during my ninety years,” said Dr. Ruth Westheimer. “I am delighted that audiences will be able to share that experience both on Hulu and in movie theaters around the U.S.”

“The remarkable journey that led Dr. Ruth Westheimer to become the cultural icon she is today is a story that demands to be told,” said Hulu’s SVP of Originals, Craig Erwich. “Ask Dr. Ruth tells the untold story of strength, perseverance and the constant quest for knowledge against all odds, and we can’t wait to share this incredible film with audiences.”

“I’ve been filming Dr. Ruth for the past two years and I can barely keep up with her,” said Director Ryan White. “At 90, she's still a force to be reckoned with. It's an honor to collaborate on her incredible life story.”

Hulu’s award-winning documentary slate has expanded over the past year to include lauded tentpole documentariesMinding the Gap (winner of this year’s New York Film Critics Circle Best Documentary Award), Crime + Punishment, Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie and Emmy Award-winning March of the Penguins 2: The Next Step. The premium streaming service is also home to a full slate of original documentaries that examine untold stories in pop culture such as the Grammy and Emmy Award-winning film The Beatles: 8 Days A Week – The Touring Years, Too Funny To Fail, Obey Giant, Becoming Bond, Dumb and Batman and Bill.

Ask Dr. Ruth is a Hulu Documentary produced by Delirio Films. White serves as director and producer  alongside Rafael Marmor, Christopher Leggett and Jessica Hargrave and executive produced by Peggy Drexler.

HULU ACQUIRES AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY “CRIME + PUNISHMENT”

HULU ACQUIRES AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY “CRIME + PUNISHMENT”

NEW HULU DOCUMENTARY TO PREMIERE IN THEATERS AND ON HULU AUGUST 24TH

Today, Hulu announced a deal to acquire whistleblower doc CRIME + PUNISHMENT as a Hulu documentary. After debuting at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, CRIME + PUNISHMENT went on to win the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Social Impact Filmmaking, and has garnered numerous awards, including the Grand Jury Prize at the 2018 Independent Film Festival in Boston. Stephen Maing directed, produced and filmed, and Academy Award Winner Laura Poitras serves as an executive producer.

The premium streaming service will partner with IFC Films to release the documentary simultaneously in theaters and on Hulu on August 24th.

CRIME + PUNISHMENT is a galvanizing and visually striking documentary that goes behind the scenes and undercover to expose discriminatory policing practices, intimidation and corruption within the New York Police Department. Told from multiple perspectives and precincts throughout New York City, Maing cinematically chronicles a band of minority whistleblower officers known as The NYPD 12, as well as the efforts of ex-cop turned private investigator, Manuel Gomez as they seek to expose the illegal use of arrest and summons quotas.

With unprecedented fly-on-the-wall access, the film artfully weaves an ensemble of interconnected stories and evidence from The NYPD 12, who put their careers on the line and mount a David vs. Goliath legal challenge—only to find themselves weathering harassment and retaliation from within their own departments.

“It was an act of bravery and defiance by all the cops and families who allowed their stories to be documented over the past four years so I’m heartened to know their efforts will not be in vain and this story made widely accessible,” said Maing. “It’s exciting to have Hulu’s amazing partnership and share this film theatrically, pursue an ambitious social impact campaign and present these previously unheard voices of active duty officers into the national dialogue around police reform. I am grateful for the collaborations and support I've received along the way, but most importantly to the brave participants of the film who have stepped forward for the sake of other citizens and officers.”

CRIME + PUNISHMENT is the latest film to join Hulu’s award-winning documentary slate, which includes the recently-released TINY SHOULDERS: RETHINKING BARBIE and MARCH OF THE PENGUINS 2: THE NEXT STEP, as well as Grammy and Emmy Award winning film THE BEATLES: 8 DAYS A WEEK – THE TOURING YEARS, TOO FUNNY TO FAIL, OBEY GIANT, BECOMING BOND, DUMB and BATMAN AND BILL.

The deal also expands Hulu’s relationship with IFC Films, which includes an output agreement for non-documentary, narrative films. Maing produced alongside Ross Tuttle and Eric Daniel Metzgar.

Synopsis: Charlie Haverford (Jeffrey Donovan) promised Linda (KaDee Strickland) a home when they first met – a luxury they have yet to truly relax into all these years later, given their never-ending chase of the next con. Now, more than ever, Charlie and Linda need to completely trust one another, but that’s never been easy for these two unrelenting con-artists.  As Linda struggles with Gina’s (Emmanuelle Chriqui) death, her concern over Charlie’s sanity, and the thinning thread of faith she has for her husband’s “plan” to save their lives and livelihood, Charlie plots to get out from under Fonso (Angus Sampson), Rita (Isabella Rossellini) and Eduardo’s (David Zayas) thumbs. Meanwhile, he continues to attempt to make sense of his visions and to further his quest to finally realize a “home” for his family.
The Marks family faces similar uncertainty as their home has quite literally been taken from them. Fonso and Rita are left at odds following the dramatic events surrounding Drina (Havana Guppy) and Lil’ Tony’s wedding. Rita, a staunch defender of tradition, quickly learns that her future depends on deftly navigating her obligations to her family and her culture. Her life is further complicated by a federal investigation that threatens everything she holds dear.  Fonso, now cast out from his family and community, must reinvent himself and figure out where this new incarnation belongs. Even in Los Angeles – a city caught between bullshit and enlightenment – there is no place like home.
